Stop trying to love God.

Stop trying to love God.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (speaking of Jesus), and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 English Standard Version (ESV) – brackets mine

“…God is love.”
1 John 4:8b English Standard Version (ESV)

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
John 1:17 English Standard Version (ESV)

When Saul encountered Jesus, he did not encounter wrath, anger and punishment,
instead, he encountered the essence of who God is: love, grace and truth. Many people get confused and think that truth and law are one and the same thing, but do you notice how grace and truth are together and come from Jesus, but law comes from Moses. There is no law in grace and no grace in law.

Saul knew the law before his encounter with Jesus and he was doing his best to follow it. Knowing Moses (the law) only made Saul harsh, judgemental and full of hatred (Acts8:1, 9:1-2). Yes, it made him zealous but not in love, mercy or grace. When Saul encountered grace, truth and unconditional love he became zealous about the right things. Mr Law-Man became Mr Grace-Man after he encountered Jesus. As we allow the truth of God’s unconditional love and amazing grace to impact our hearts; as we encounter Jesus and experience Him (love, grace and truth) we will radically change.

“Beloved friends, because of my love for Jesus Christ, I am now his prisoner… so that you will hear the gospel…”
Ephesians 3:1-2 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Paul declared himself to be a prisoner (or servant) of God because of His love for God, not because he feared God or felt obliged to do anything for God. He loved God so much that he willingly submitted himself to God as His servant. Legalism will tell you everything that you need to do for God and everything that you’re not doing for Him (that you aren’t good enough). Your best efforts will never satisfy the law because they could never make you acceptable before God.

“Our faith in Jesus transfers God’s righteousness to us and he now declares us flawless in his eyes. This means we can now enjoy true and lasting peace with God, all because of what our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, has done for us.”
Romans 5:1 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Our faith in Jesus and what He has done for us is what makes us acceptable to God. We could never be good enough through our best efforts to do what is right, but through faith in
Jesus, we receive the gift of God’s righteousness which makes us flawless in His eyes.

“We love Him because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:19 New King James Version (NKJV)

Legalism treats you as you deserve and will tell you that you must love God more – it puts the pressure on you to perform and focuses on what you can do for God – but grace treats you better than you deserve, and focuses on what Jesus has done for you and is freely offering you. The reason that Paul loved God so much was that He had experienced God’s powerful love which is without any condition and has no strings attached. Paul’s love for God was a response to experiencing God’s love and that’s why he could identify himself as a servant of Christ.

Don’t try to love God more, focus on His love for you.
