How close are you to God?
“Yet look at you now! Everything is new! Although you were once distant and far away from God, now you have been brought delightfully close to him through the sacred blood of Jesus—you have actually been united to Christ!
14 Our reconciling “Peace” is Jesus! He has made Jew and non-Jew one in Christ. By dying as our sacrifice, he has broken down every wall of prejudice that separated us and has now made us equal through our union with Christ.”
Ephesians 2:13-14 The Passion Translation (TPT)
On a scale of 0% to 100%, how close do you feel to God, right now? Take a moment and think about it? Why did you give that answer? Maybe you gave yourself a low score because you had a bad week? Maybe you recently messed up, or you just haven’t been living up to the standards that you know you should, and want to? Maybe you gave yourself a good score because you feel that you have been doing well? You’ve been seeking God, studying the Word, praying and you haven’t knowingly messed up? Your answer to this question reveals a lot about what you subconsciously believe yourself, about how God sees you and what you believe about the Christian life.
“…Although you were once distant and far away from God, now you have been brought delightfully close to him through the sacred blood of Jesus—you have actually been united to Christ!”
Ephesians 2:13 The Passion Translation (TPT)
As a believer, you are now “delightfully close to Him” all because of Jesus’ blood and not through your best efforts to live holy and right. Right now, at this very moment, you are as close to God as you will ever get! In fact, you are united with Him and are one with Him. That means that if you answered anything less than 100% to the question of “how close do you feel to God?” you answered wrong and do not know who you are in Christ.
“But the one who joins himself to the Lord is mingled into one spirit with him.”
1 Corinthians 6:17 The Passion Translation (TPT)
When you say “yes” to Jesus, you become one with Him. In the Greek, the word “one” gives the idea of uniting or welding two together so that they are one. It’s showing us that two have become one to such a degree that there is no way of telling the difference between them, and there is no way of separating them. Your “yes” to Jesus joined you with Him and now you are “delightfully close to Him”. I understand that you may not feel close to God right now and that is why you answered less than 100%, but the reality is that no matter how you feel and no matter how you’re performing, you are always and continuously one with Him. The Christian life is not a journey of trying to obtain perfection, and it isn’t a second-chance of trying harder to become holy, it’s also not a process of growing closer to God because you are as close to God now as you will ever be! The Christian life is not about becoming but about discovering – it’s about you discovering what happened the moment you became a Christian and how you changed (2 Corinthians 5:17); it’s about you discovering who you are because you’re now in Christ! You’re close to God even if you feel far from Him.
Religion (man’s effort to please God and get closer to Him) always makes God seem like He’s a million miles away, and it puts a huge burden on us to find God and get closer to Him through our performance. Jesus was and still is the greatest threat to religion because He totally eradicated every hindrance and blockage that could ever separate us from God! It doesn’t matter how far away from God you may feel, “Although you were once distant and far away from God, now you have been brought delightfully close to him through the sacred blood of Jesus—you have actually been united to Christ!” God is closer than you think! In fact, you cannot measure the distance between you and God because there is none.
“…For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.””
Hebrews 13:5 New King James Version (NKJV)
God is faithful and will never break His word. He is always with you and will never leave you. This means you are never alone. It might be a sobering thought for some, but it’s really a wonderful truth!
Say it out loud: “No matter how alone I may feel, I am never alone! I am delightfully close to God! I am one with Him!”
