The sheep hear His voice – Jesus never said that we should hear His voice, or that we can hear it, but that we do. As believers, we have an unfair advantage in life because we hear God’s voice. Religion has made prayer out to be a monologue where you do all the talking or pleading with God, but in true Christianity, prayer is a dialogue where we talk and listen. Success in life flows out of this life-giving relationship.
 
You may be thinking that you can’t hear God’s voice but Jesus made it pretty clear that you do. We don’t need to ask God to speak to us, we just need to tune in and discern His voice. It’s like a television station that transmits signals all the time. You may have a television in your home but unless you turn the television on and tune it in you will not be able to watch anything. You don’t need to invite God to speak to you – He is speaking. It’s not a question of whether He is speaking; it’s a question of whether you are turned on and tuned in.

You need to learn to discern God’s voice. Success in life is as simple as hearing from God and doing what He says, but the problem is that most believers are too busy to listen. We shouldn’t only be wanting to hear from God when we need to make big decisions or when we’re in a crisis – that’s not a relationship, it’s consultation. It’s difficult for us to discern God’s voice in times of crisis is we haven’t learnt to discern His voice in everyday life. It’s in stillness, not busyness, that we tune in our spiritual ears to hear the voice of God. When we allow our hearts to become still (and not have them running off in 5-million directions to try and solve all the issues we have) then we can recognize and understand God’s voice.

And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

We’re often waiting for God to speak in some big fancy way and yet the Lord always speaks to us in a “STILL, small voice” which is often drowned out amid all the turmoil and clutter of our daily lives. God is speaking to you and in your heart, you know His voice, but it will be difficult for you to discern that voice between all your appointments, your social calendar and your favourite series. Knowing what God is saying to you will lead you into great opportunities and out of potential disaster – you have access to inside information which puts you at an unfair advantage and sets you up for success in the world.
